There are many aspects in life that causes teenager trouble. Sometimes it’s having noticeable blemishes that embarrass them, or possibly the stress of not getting their homework finished. Regardless of the reasons for their insecurities, one should have the right to come home to a house full of acceptance and care. However, its becoming a trend to dread going home. The life of children, especially younger siblings, has become incredibly difficult.
You’re compared no matter what. As a baby, you were compared on your growth to average babies, or other children your parents might have known. Getting older, you’ll have your skills matched up among others. You can rise above, or fall behind.
“You’re just like sister. Why can’t you be exactly like your brother?” These are common phrases spoken to younger siblings. They get to experience life in the shadows of their siblings, and also the things that their elders have done. It’s difficult being constantly compared to someone who is not you, and getting those facts thrown in your face of who you’re not. Parents seem to forget that you are an individual.
You do not have the same genes as those before you, so why be the same person?
Dealing with trying to find yourself and who others feel you should be is often confusing.
Here are a few tricks that students might try to work through who they want to be.
1. Spend a few hours of the day by yourself.
No one knows you better than you. It’s going through and realizing the characteristics of your personality that make you your own person. Sometimes it’s hard to realize what you want and who you want to be in life. Spending that time with you, and only you can help you realize the things going on that you may have just looked over before. Seeing things from a new perspective may help you realize who you are, and the type of person you want to be.
2. Gain a backbone.
You need to make yourself known that you are yourself, and no one else. Let people know that you expect to be who you are, and not a perfect Barbie (unless, of course, you are indeed made of plastic). Showing your true colors is the way to get people to see you as an individual. Stepping up to your folks can result bad at first, but once all is said and done they will respect you for telling them that you want to be treated as you and not your siblings.
3. Look at yourself through a mirror, not a window.
Through it all, you tend to see other people and how they react to their environment. It’s human to want to be just like those surrounding you. Looking through that window can cause you to miss out on yourself. That’s why you should look at you, and what you like rather than what others think. So what some girls think Justin Bieber is a girl? While listening to his voice and reading his lyrics, you may come to realize you actually like what he has to show.
Personality and characteristics make a person. Showing off yourself in your own skin is the way to live life.
